Making Fish Collage with Eve

Join Eve for a fun and creative journey into fabric collage! In this two-part class, you'll learn how to create whimsical, colorful fish using a painterly collage quilting technique. Whether you turn your fish into placemats, a throw pillow, or a wall hanging, they’ll add a unique and artistic touch to your projects.

As part of your class fee, you'll receive the Making Fish Collage pattern by Laura Heine. This pattern includes four full-sized fish designs, instructions for completing four placemats (14” x 22”), and inspiration for additional applications.

Class Structure:

Session 1: Create your fish collage – no sewing machines needed! We'll go over fabric selection, layout, and fusing techniques. (You’ll have some homework before the next session.)

Session 2: Learn quilting techniques to bring your fish to life! We’ll explore stitching, finishing options, and how to turn your collage into a polished piece.

Supplies List

For Session 1 (No Sewing Machine Needed)

• Making Fish Collage pattern (Read the directions beforehand to visualize the project.)
• Background Fabric:
  • For 4 placemats: 1 1/3 yards of 44” fabric (watery prints, blenders, or solids work well).
  • For a pillow or wall hanging: Bring your chosen fabric size, adding at least 4” extra for quilting.
• Collage Fabrics: Approx. 30 fabric pieces (3” x 11”) in colors you love. Batiks work well due to minimal fraying, but small prints, blenders, and solids also create great texture.
• 1 yard of Pattern Ease Foundation
• 17” x 24” Appliqué Pressing Sheet (Goddess Pressing Sheet or similar)
• 3 yards of 12” Steam-a-Seam Lite or Regular
• Rotary cutter, small mat, and small ruler (4” x 12”)
• Optional: Pre-fuse Steam-a-Seam to the back of your fabric pieces before class (follow manufacturer’s instructions).

For Session 2 (Sewing Machine Needed)

• Sewing machine in good working order
• Basic sewing foot, ¼” foot, walking foot (if available), and free-motion foot (optional)
• Neutral or background-matching thread with pre-wound bobbins
• Batting (enough for 4 placemats or your project)
• Backing Fabric:
  • For 4 placemats: 1 1/3 yards
  • For other projects: Enough to back your piece
• Fabric for binding

• Classes canceled by Cut Up and Sew will be fully refunded to each student or, if preferred, students may receive store credit.

• If you are unable to make a class or event, please contact Cut Up and Sew 72 hours/3 days prior to the start date of such class or event to receive a full refund.

• There are no refunds for cancellations made less than 72 hours/3 days before the start date of a class.  Your class fee can be applied towards another class or returned in the form of store credit.

• There are no refunds on class fees for "Special Event" or outside teachers/classes within 30 days of the event date unless we can fill your spot with another person. 

• Refunds will not be provided for "No Shows".

• If you have a major emergency and need to cancel your attendance at a class, up to the time of such class we will work with you to either make up the class or provide you with a store credit.
