Flat Lock Serger Purse - PC

This is a fun, decorative Serger project.  This purse can be made on any brand of serger.  Note that we do use Chain stitch, but if you do not have a combo or cover stitch machine, we will have a machine available when needed.  Playing with different stitch techniques and threads makes this project fun to create and learn!  You must be comfortable with threading your machine.  Finished purse 9"x9".

Materials:
  • Serger and manual
  • Pattern is included in class fee (a $20 value)
  • Serger needles (90/14 recommended, 80/12 will work)
  • width of fabric 2.5" strips (6pcs of a jellyroll)
  • 20" length of fabric for handle (width needed for your belt loop binder, if you have one(This is included in the 6 strips above)
  • 2" square for the custom button (or bring a large button) (You can use fabric left over from the strips above)
  • 4 spools serger thread (do not need to be same color, used to embellish so contrast to the fabric color is good)
  • 2 small spools of 12 wt decorative thread (2 contrasting colors for decoration)
  • Double sided fusible R Bosal 24.5"x12.5" (or the Pellon equivalent)
  • 1 yd 1/2" wide flexible trim (I do not recommend rickrack)
  • 16" or longer nylon zipper, small teeth
  • Lining fabric 24.5"x12.5" (1/2 yard)
  • 2yd narrow ribbon 1/8" wide
  • Hand needle to sew on button and for gathering stitch on flower
  • Heavy duty thread to gather flower and attach button

Tools:
  • Bodkin, darning needle, or double eye needle
  • Cording/Piping foot
  • Lace applicator foot (not necessary, but nice to use)
  • Belt loop binder (large)
  • Press cloth
  • Clips or pins.  I don't normally clip or pin my projects.  I recommend clips over pins so you don't risk damaging the blade on your machine.
  • Heavy duty scissors to cut nylon zipper
  • Marking tool (chalk or temporary pen)
  • Small ruler to mark box corners
  • Any other sewing tools you can't live without
