Serger 101: The Basics of Serging

Want to know how a serger works? Ready to learn the basics of using YOUR serger?

In this hands on workshop you will learn:
How sergers differ from sewing machines and discuss thread/fabric requirements for successful serging.

All participants will: set up and thread their serger, stitch and finish seams with 3 and 4 thread overlock, make a rolled hem on a raw fabric edge, make a flatlock seam. Those with adjustable differential will make a gathered edge.

Those participants with a cover and chain stitch combo machine will learn those stitches.

Supply List:

• Serger in good working order (4 or 8 thread) Provide Make and Model to the shop
• Machine manual and threading guide
• All accessories and feet you have
• Serger tweezers
• Double eyed needle
• Four spools of any brand serger thread in four colors
• Fabric: quilter’s cotton 1” x 18” 2 ½” strips, several in 12-24” lengths (scraps work fine) 6” x 6” square 6.5” x 6.5” square (contrast from the 6 x6)
• OPTIONAL: 12 wt decorative thread i.e. Sulky, Wonder Knit fabric 2-3” wide x 12” (don’t buy knits for this class, instructor will bring some)

• Classes canceled by Cut Up and Sew will be fully refunded to each student or, if preferred, students may receive store credit.

• If you are unable to make a class or event, please contact Cut Up and Sew 72 hours/3 days prior to the start date of such class or event to receive a full refund.

• There are no refunds for cancellations made less than 72 hours/3 days before the start date of a class.  Your class fee can be applied towards another class or returned in the form of store credit.

• There are no refunds on class fees for "Special Event" or outside teachers/classes within 30 days of the event date unless we can fill your spot with another person. 

• Refunds will not be provided for "No Shows".

• If you have a major emergency and need to cancel your attendance at a class, up to the time of such class we will work with you to either make up the class or provide you with a store credit.
