Fabric Ice Dying

What to expect:
Join us while Sarah shows us all how to create beautiful ice-dyed fabrics. Your dye piece can be an art piece all on its’ own or you can use the technique to make some amazing and unique fabrics to turn into your own pieces. You could choose to dye fabric, clothing, yarn, tea towels, or whatever your heart desires if it’s created with natural fibers.
What to bring:
- An open mind and heart with the desire to create something beautiful!
- Fabric- Any 100% natural cellulose/plant-based fiber can be used. This includes cotton, rayon, bamboo, silk, and linen. Yardage and/or garments (t-shirts and such) or household items such as napkins, tablecloths, and curtains are fine.
- Important: Prewash all fabric; do not use fabric softener or dryer sheets.
- A set up that will allow you to suspend fabric and ice over a container to catch the melt water. Options include: a large pot and steamer basket, a bucket and plastic colander, a bucket and cloth window screen with clothes pins, any type of sturdy grid, grate, or cooking rack that you can place over a container. You may need cardboard to keep the ice in place.
- ICE- You can bring a few gallon size freezer bags of ice from your icemaker at home in a cooler. Or you could swing by any grocery store or a Gas Station close to the shop buy a bag before the meeting.
- Rubber Gloves
- Dust Mask
- Plastic Spoons
- Plastic covering for workspace.
- Rubber bands
- Clothes pins
- Ziplock Storage Bags or Grocery Bags
- Apron or clothing that you don’t mind getting dye on.
- Small Extra fine mesh strainer (optional)
- Aluminum foil (optional)
- Lightweight cardboard (optional)
- Binder clips (optional)
If this is your first-time ice dyeing, or dyeing fabric, I suggest the One-Step Dyes such as Tulip One-Step Tie Dyes, RIT Dye Powders, or any other branded One-Step Dye. Available online and in stores such as Joann, Michaels, Walmart, or Target.
