Quilting 101: A Comprehensive 7 Sessions Course
Quilting 101 is the perfect introductory course for anyone interested in starting their quilting hobby or for those who want to refresh their quilting skills. Over seven weeks, you will be guided through all the fundamental aspects of quilting, from the basics of cutting and color selection to achieving accurate ¼” seams, mastering quilting techniques, and finishing your project with a label. By the end of the course, you will have completed a beautiful Simple Sampler quilt, suitable for use as a table topper or wall hanging, with a finished size of 40” x 40”.
Course Outline:
Session 1:
- Introduction to Quilting: Understanding terminology and processes.
- Tools and Supplies: Familiarization with essential quilting tools and materials.
- Fabric Selection: Tips for choosing the right fabrics and colors for your project.
Session 2:
- Preparing Fabric: Properly ironing and cutting fabric for your quilt.
- Basic Piecing: Introduction to piecing techniques and accurate ¼” seams and sewing Rail Fence Blocks.
Session 3:
- Block Construction: Creating individual 9-Patch quilt blocks with different designs.
- Squaring Up Blocks: Learning the importance of keeping all your blocks squared as you piece.
Session 4:
- Block Construction: Creating half-square triangles and Friendship Star quilt blocks.
- Introduction to Quilting Patterns: Understanding different quilting patterns and styles.
Session 5:
- Layout and Design: Assembling your quilt blocks into a harmonious layout.
- Adding Borders: Incorporating borders into your quilt design.
- Quilting Techniques: Discussion of how to baste and quilt your quilt.
Session 6:
- Preparing for Quilting: How to mark your top for quilt and how to make a quilt sandwich.
- Quilting: Learning how to use your walking foot to quilt.
Session 7:
- Finishing Touches: Adding binding and finishing edges for a polished look.
- Creating a Label: Designing and attaching a label to your completed quilt.
- Show and Tell: Sharing your finished Simple Sampler quilt with the class.
- Recap and Next Steps: Reviewing the course content and discussing further quilting projects.
Class Format and Pricing: The course will be conducted in person, taking place over seven weeks with a total of 15 instructional hours. Each session will run for 2.5 hours. Due to the desire for a personalized experience, the class will have limited seating, allowing a maximum of six students.
Course Fee: $150 (for the entire 7 sessions course) + supplies.
Supplies: You will receive an email with details. It’s recommended you don’t rush out to purchase new tools until we discuss them in class. Reminder all students receive 15% off all class supplies at Cut Up and Sew.
